Conquering fitness: What’s holding you back?

Where are you in your personal journey?

A heavy question… we know.

But, it’s a question we must all ask ourselves in a constant effort to stay in tune with who we are in the present and who we want to become.

Maybe you’re feeling:

1. Pressured by society’s expectations to fit a certain mold or be a certain size. This can create anxiety and self-doubt preventing you from taking the first step towards a healthier lifestyle.

2. Blocked by a lack of representation in the fitness industry or held back by cultural norms to stay in your land or fail to support exploring fitness genres.

3. Bound by financial barriers so you can’t join a gym or hire a fitness trainer.

4. Stuck by lack of knowledge and have no idea how to start.

5. Embarrassed because of your fill in the black (inexperience, weight, lack of resources)?

6. Trapped by an unrelenting schedule so you can’t commit to a regimen the same day and time every week.

Don't worry, sis, we've got your back!

As black women, we know that finding the time, space, and resources to work out can sometimes be a struggle, but we also know that nothing is more important than taking care of ourselves. That's why we're here to provide you with some easy tips and tricks for starting a no-excuse workout program that won't break the bank or require a ton of space. Whether you're a total newbie or just looking to switch up your routine, we've got everything you need to get started on your journey to living your best life.

So, let's get moving, girl!

Stop The Excuses. Start The Execution.

One of the biggest obstacles to overcoming a fitness plateau is believing that you can't do it. We've all been there, girl! That's why it's time to stop making excuses and start executing your plan.

Start by taking a few moments each day to reflect on what you want out of your fitness journey, whether that’s feeling more energized, losing weight, or gaining strength - whatever it may be, having a clear vision is key to successfully completing any workout program.

Take this self-reflection process seriously because once you have an idea of where you want to be and how you'll get there, saying goodbye to your excuses becomes much easier.

Fitness on a Budget

When it comes to fitness, there's no need to break the bank. In fact, chances are that you already have all of the equipment (and people) you need!

Start by taking inventory of what you already have in your home - yoga mats, jump ropes, weights and resistance bands can help kickstart a great workout routine. You may even want to look into investing in some inexpensive pieces like kettlebells or ankle/wrist weights for an added challenge.

Get creative with your environment by using chairs and couches as props for push-ups, tricep dips, or step-ups. The goal here is to make the most of what you already have and use as many free resources as possible.

Getting Fit With Limited Space

Do you live in an apartment or small home that doesn't afford a lot of space? Not a problem! You can still get fit without the need for extra flooring or a dedicated gym area.

Start embracing the 'less is more' concept by utilizing online streaming workouts like yoga or HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) classes which only require minimal space. All you'll need is enough room to lie down or stand up comfortably, making it easy to complete a workout in the comfort of your own home.

Tackle Your Busy Schedule

  • Life can get hectic but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your health and fitness goals. Here’s how you can fit a workout into your day:

  • Set realistic expectations and timelines by breaking down your fitness goals into smaller, more achievable steps.

  • Schedule workouts just like any other important task in your day - block out time for yourself to ensure you make it happen!

  • Make use of short-duration workouts that don't require a lot of time in order to maximize efficiency and results. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) are short workouts with maximum impact.

Physical Challenges? No Problem!

If physical limitations have been preventing you from getting active, there are still plenty of ways you can get your body moving. Start by checking out resources specifically catered to those with physical challenges - you can find online classes and programs that have been tailored for overweight, wheelchair users, amputees, or other modified needs. You may even want to look into adaptive sports like wheelchair basketball or archery! The goal here is to find an activity that works best with your individual capabilities and make it as fun and enjoyable as possible.

Get Up and Go!

Fitness doesn't have to be expensive, time-consuming, or intimidating - it's all about finding the right fit for you. Whether you're on a budget, have no space to spare, are out of shape/never worked out before, physically challenged or too busy - there's always an option that works for you! Find something that you enjoy and look forward- this is your best chance for success.

Ladies, it's never too late to look good and feel even better. Taking control of your fitness journey is your golden ticket to physical freedom.

See you at the finish line!
